Characteristics and techniques of cannabis transplants
Techniques to properly transplant cannabis at home
In the literal sense, a transplant is the transfer of a plant from one container to another so that it does not die and, ideally, becomes even stronger. The best to this prosess fem cannabis strain
ROOT CANNABIS SYSTEM
Refers to the rod type. It is not characterized by strong spreading. In open ground, the roots are able to penetrate to a depth of 1.5-2 m; in closed ground, as a rule, they do not reach a depth of more than 0.5 m.
It all depends on the type of cannabis, the size of the pot and external factors. The roots of the plant are white. If brown blotches appear on them, then this is a clear sign of infection with fungi or mold.
The main functions of the cannabis root system:
- Reliable retention of the plant in the ground;
- Absorption of nutrients, minerals and water;
- Accumulation of nutrients.
WHY DO YOU NEED A TRANSFER?
In closed ground, the volume of which is small, the roots, when they reach the bottom of the pot, begin to grow to the side in order to hold the top of the plant.
As a result, they collect along the edges of the container, and in the center of it the soil remains free. And although in the early stages of cannabis development this leads to a more uniform and dense root mass that can absorb more nutrients from the saturated topsoil, at some point the plant will slow down and stop due to the lack of free space for the roots.
But, if the plant is transplanted in time, then a uniformly developed and dense root system will have a positive effect on the growth rate and productivity of the plant.
HOW TO DEFINE WHAT SHOULD BE TRANSPLANTED?
- ⚠️ Fast drying soil.
The soil dries out quickly because the roots of the plants take all the moisture out of it, and there is not enough of it.
- ⚠️The leaves have begun to fall.
Drooping leaves indicate that the bushes are not getting enough liquid.
- ⚠️ The leaves are turning yellow.
Leaves may turn yellow for various reasons, one of which is a lack of nutrients and moisture. In combination with other signs, yellowing leaves on the veg are an alarm signal indicating the need for a transplant.
- ⚠️ The size of the bush is too large in relation to the pot.
If the size of the bush is much larger than the size of the container, and this discrepancy is striking, it definitely does not hurt to change the pot.
- ⚠️ Growth has stopped .
The vegetative bush has stopped growing in size - a clear sign that the root system cannot cope with the support of the upper part of the plant.
- ⚠️ Frequent watering.
It is worth considering transplanting to a larger pot if the plants require daily watering.
- ⚠️The roots have come out of the drainage hole.
Carefully examine the drainage hole at the bottom - if you see the tips of the roots sticking out of it, it's time to change the pot.
MAIN CANNABIS ROOTS ERRORS
- ⛔Shaking off the roots from the ground. This should not be allowed, as this can damage the root system.
- ⛔The new pot uses a different soil. This can lead to an extended period of stress.
- ⛔The sprout is still too small for transplanting. Weak seedlings that have not yet formed three more pairs of leaves can be severely retarded in growth.
- ⛔ Transplantation at the flowering stage. In color, the bushes should spend all their energy on the formation of inflorescences and the production of fragrant resin, and not on dealing with stress after transplantation.
- ⛔ Transplant bushes that are under the influence of stress or illness.
- ⛔ Delayed transfer. If you miss the moment when the pot has become too small, the roots will fill the entire volume of the container, intertwined with each other. In a new pot, it will be difficult for them to grow deep and get the right amount of nutrients.
- ⛔ Transplant outdoors in early spring, when the air temperature is still not stable enough and night frosts are possible.
PREPARING THE OLD POT
In order for the transplant to a new pot to be most successful, it is necessary that the soil in the old pot is not too wet and not too dry:
- ❗Very wet soil will be heavy, and therefore will fall apart into pieces along with the torn off roots of the plant. The loss of root mass will have an extremely negative effect on the plant;
- ❗ Too dry soil crumbles into small pieces, which the root system cannot grasp on its own. As a result, she will be exposed and will perceive the transplant extremely negatively, because it will be very easy to damage her in this form.
- ❗ The best option would be to let the soil dry out 1-2 days after watering, then its consistency will be optimal.
It usually looks like this:
- ✅ A lump of earth with roots is peeled off from the walls of the pot. To do this, the container must be crushed or rolled between the palms;
- ✅ A palm is placed on the surface of the soil, and the stem of the plant is held by the middle and ring fingers;
- ✅ The pot is turned upside down and removed from the earthy coma. If you can’t remove it, then you need to pat the walls or bottom with your second hand;
- ✅ Now all this stuff is immersed in a larger pot, in which the bottom is already covered with drainage and earth. Earth is poured into the cavities remaining on the sides, but it is not strongly crushed. This is necessary so that the roots can easily enter the fresh earth;
The transfer is completed. Don't forget to lightly water your tree.
This is how the mechanics of the process looks like, but it is also important to understand the essence of the phenomenon.
The classic transfer scheme looks like this:
However, most growers argue that transplanting should be done no more than 1-2 times over the life of a plant.
This means transplanting from a 1 liter baby pot to a final 15 liter boy's pot, or planting into a 5 liter adolescent pot and then transferring to the final one. Like this.
When is the best time to transplant cannabis?
- ⛔ Do not transplant a small sprout.
✔Firstly, he is unlikely to transfer the transplant normally. Which will have a very negative impact on its entire life cycle.
✔Secondly, its roots are still very weak to hold the ground. It will simply crumble, and the baby will certainly get injured and even more stress;
- ⛔ Cannabis should not be transplanted during the flowering period.
At this point, the development of the root system practically stops, and the plant simply cannot establish itself normally in the ground. In addition, excess stress will adversely affect the quality and quantity of the crop.
What if you leave it in a small pot?
The roots have already spread as densely as possible throughout the entire volume of the pot, and this serves as a signal to stop the growth of the upper part. And the mechanism of plant growth involves constant development. And without this very development, we will not see the bumpy bumps.
As soon as the roots begin to suffer, the tip begins to suffer doubly.
This, in fact, is such a bold hint that the moment has come when it is simply necessary to transplant cannabis.
A transplant is good because it gives new scope for the development of the root system, fresh earth appears with a variety of trace elements. In principle, the plant immediately understands that everything is good and there is potential for development. Simultaneously with the roots, the bush itself becomes more magnificent and taller.
TRANSPLANT PHOTO AND AUTO CANNABIS STRAIN
Every grower should know that all of the above about the positive aspects of cannabis transplanting applies more to photoperiod strains .
Being able to control the length of their growing season allows them to safely recover and get stronger in the event of transplant stress. After that, the grower will be able to move the plant to the flowering stage, while maintaining or increasing the yield.
Autoflowering cannabis is a little different .
Their transplantation should be painless for the plant, and this is quite difficult to do and only experienced gardeners can do it.
Transplanting as the bushes grow is justified only in the case of photoperiod varieties.
Autoflowers have a very short growing season of only 2-4 weeks and during this precious time you need to protect your plants from any stressors. Unlike fotik, autoflowers begin to bloom without reference to daylight hours. They move on to flowering, focusing on their life cycle.
And even if the bushes are still too small and weak, they will still bloom when the internal timer goes off.
As a result, the grower will not get the harvest that he could count on.
That is why it is better to transplant autos only once during the entire period of their growth and development. In the outdoor - when the sprout is placed in open ground.
Indoors - when planting a germinated seed immediately into a pot of 10-15 liters.
